5 Ways to Survive Post Travel Blues

Wikipedia’s definition of post travel blues, “…vacation/holiday blues or less commonly, post-travel depression (PTD) is a type of mood that persons returning home from a long trip (usually a vacation) may experience.”

Dorothy told us, “There’s no place like home.”   It’s ironic that my legal residence is Kansas City.  I still haven’t seen an actual tornado yet.  But, what when we don’t want to go back home from a trip.  What if the thought of coming back sends of reeling into post travel blues?

5 Ways to Cope with Post Travel Blues:

  1. Take care of yourself.  This may sound cliche but, take care of your physical needs.  A lack of sleep, for example can mimic depression and/or anxiety.  This is especially the case when you’re coping with jet lag.  Do the things you know you need to do: drink water, get some sleep, eat right.  Get your body back into the swing of things.
  2. Realize this is normal.  Who doesn’t want to stay on holiday?  It’s absolutely normal to experience a let down and the “blues” after returning home.
  3. Incorporate part of your trip into your life.  Did you have a blast in Copacabana?  Drink caipirinhas, learn Portuguese, go to a Brazilian restaurant or cook some feijoada.  Watch a movie that took place in Brazil.  Learn how to samba and play the beats you heard in your car or home.  Subscribe to Instagram accounts from the place you visited to stay in the loop of the goings on there.
  4. Relive your trip.  Reminiscing has a purpose-to allow us to relive moments.  Relive your trip by looking at pictures, take a gander at moments you brought back, some people relive their experiences by scrapbooking.  Do something to bring back your experience
  5. Book another trip.  My favorite way to deal with post travel blues is to not even experience them.  Before one trip ends, I have another one either booked or tentatively planned.
